Book review - Red Verses.

This is a personal book review of Red Verses by Pearlina Gracelyn. Pearlina is my best friend, but did I truly know how deep her thoughts ran? No. While reading this book, it felt as if I was not just turning the pages but unveiling the chapters of her life. It’s raw, real, and straight from her heart, something you can feel with every word.

The words are beautifully yet simply crafted, resonating deeply with the reader. This is not just a collection of poems but an outpouring of emotions printed onto paper. I could sense how much courage and vulnerability it must have taken for her to write these pieces, and that makes the book even more profound.

I don’t know if it was mere coincidence, but I truly loved how the poem "My Wedding Day" ended with the verse "As husband and wife." That single line, placed on a separate page, made it so much more impactful. The simplicity of dedicating one page to such a significant line brought out the true essence of the poem’s subject.

Reading about her loss during COVID-19 moved me to tears. Losing your loved ones is not as simple as it sounds, and I cannot even begin to imagine what she was going through during such a difficult time.

One of the main attractions of this book is the side story provided along with each poem. It allows readers to understand why she wrote the poem and what she was feeling when she did. This added layer of context deepens the emotional connection to her words.

I related so strongly to the poems "Secondary" and "Perfection." It felt as though Pearlina had captured my own emotions and thoughts, making me see myself in her words. The backstory of "Queen Bee" was another highlight for me. It beautifully conveyed how overwhelming it can be to suddenly find yourself the center of attention when all you desire is peace and simplicity.

Red Verses is more than a book of poetry; it’s a journey through Pearlina’s experiences, emotions, and reflections. It taught me more about her than years of friendship ever could. It’s a must-read for anyone who appreciates heartfelt poetry, poignant storytelling, and a glimpse into a writer’s soul.

To Pearlina,

You are a brave girl with a beautiful heart. Your past might have made you hate life but let the future make you the happiest person. You deserve to be happy and loved. I wish for you to experience a future filled with love and peace. You will always have me whenever you are down. ♡

Chapter 1: Embracing Self Awareness

Let me begin my first blog with a quote, " Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom"- Aristotle I am Alena, I am a normal girl with ordinary talents. If that is the way I introduce myself, what makes me different and what makes me unique?  Most of the people including myself, become insecure and shy away from challenges life has in store because of not being self-aware of their potential. Self awareness plays a major role in personal growth and well being of a person. We need to understand and keep track of our strengths and weaknesses. Our strength could end up turning into our weakness and our weakness could end up being our strength later. An example from my life: In school, I had a hard time making friends which I considered as a flaw, In college I don't find that as an issue which ends up being my strength. I remember starting a personal diary to jot down my emotions and instead of writing what I truly felt, I wrote as if somebody would read it. That is not th...

Chapter 48 : I turned 19!

Today has been the best birthday ever, and I can't stop smiling! The morning began with the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee, made with love by my mom. She surprised me with a beautiful dress that instantly became one of my favorites. My dad followed with a gift box filled with decadent chocolates, and my brother, knowing me too well, handed me my favorite chips, such simple yet thoughtful gestures that filled me with joy. When I got to college, I was greeted with warm hugs and heartfelt birthday wishes from everyone. Messages poured in, not just from friends at college but also from people I hadn’t expected, old schoolmates, friends from church, and even people I hadn't spoken to in a while. Their kindness and love made the day feel even more special, and I couldn't help but feel so blessed to be surrounded by such wonderful people.  One of the highlights was a heartfelt handmade letter from my best friend, Angel. It wasn’t just any letter; she had crafted it in...

Chapter 2: Pain behind every smile

For the people who think life is unfair, "The prettiest smiles hide the deepest secrets. The prettiest eyes have cried the most tears, and the kindest hearts have felt the most pain"- A beautiful soul. Behind every smile there is a hidden story. I had a teacher who had an immense amount of positivity in her. She always wore a beautiful smile on her face. She loved teaching her students and put in maximum effort to everything she did. Seeing her being so positive, I thought she didn't have much trials in life and I wished I was like her. Was that the reality? No!.  One day, we had a personal conversation with her and we realised how melancholic her life was. She narrated an incident where she was on the verge of losing her life and she talked about the other issues she had to encounter everyday of her life, which was not something we would imagine her having. She hid all the pain with a smile. I still remember asking her jokingly, "Should I write a book based on your ...
